Arrival of Akorem and Sisko
Akorem Laan was a highly regarded poet of the twenty-second century. He disappeared only to return to Bajor two hundred years later. He emerged from the wormhole, the Celestial Temple, and claimed to be the Emissary since the Prophets had taken such interest in him.
Sisko graciously relinquished the role of Emissary—he once told Jadzia Dax, “It’s just hard to get used to being a religious icon”—and Akorem began to implement radical changes in Bajoran society.
But Sisko regretted his decision when problems arose. Akorem’s changes would push Bajor back to a time before the Occupation, when there was a strict caste system in place, the D’jarra. The system infringed on individual rights and forced people into positions they were no longer suited for. This new system would have forced Bajor to withdraw from Federation consideration, since societies with caste systems are not accepted.
